Tirupati Local Places

Tiruchanoor, is one of the oldest pilgrim towns located 5km away from Tirupati, is abode of Goddess Sri Padmavathi Devi, the beloved consort of Lord Venkateswara. This pilgrim centre is popularly known as “Alarmelmangapuram” (Alar-Lotus, Mel-top, Manga-Goddess, Puram-town) or Alimelumangapuram. According to temple legend as Goddess Mahalakshmi emerged on the golden lotus as Padmavathi Devi located at the centre of Padmasarovaram-the temple tank, this place became famous by the name “Alarmelmangapuram”.According to a legend, there was once a pious Brahmin called Pundarika. Though he performed all the duties prescribed in the shastras, he did not have a son. Finally at the age of 50, he got a son whom he named Madhava. He brought up the child carefully making him proficient in all branches of learning and got him married to a devout lady. After some time, Madhava deviated from the righteous path and followed another woman. After her death he wandered like a mad man. One day he followed a group of pilgrims going to Tirumala. When he bathed in the holy Sudarshana Lake and climbed the hills his sins were washed off. There he heard a voice from the sky, which asked him to bathe in the Swamy Pushkarini and seek the blessings of Lord Varaha Swamy.

Kapila Theertham temple is the only Shiva temple in the vicinity of Tirupati. It is also said to be one of the 108 sacred teerthas (springs) on Tirumala hills. The Siva lingam here is made of brass. A huge stone statue of a seated bull Nandhi, greets devotees at the entrance to the temple. According to legend, Saint Kapila Maharishi was said to have lived here, worshipped and meditated in the cave in front of the idol of Lord Shiva, hence the placed is named after the saint as Kapila Theertham. Lord Shiva is said to have blessed Sage Kapila with a vision of himself and his consort. This temple received very good support from the Kings of Vijayanagara between 13th and 16th centuries, especially from Krishna Devaraya. There are many sub-shrines with-in the main temple premises. Temples for Kamakshi, Vinayaka, Subhramanya, Agastheeswara and Sri Krishna are few among them. Both the temple and the waterfall are considered to be highly sacred. A holy dip here is believed to rid the devotees of all sins. This is a good place to visit during the monsoons as the water fall looks breathtaking. The waterfall would be empty in late winter and summer seasons.

ISKCON Temple of Tirupati not only offers a divine darshan of the Lord but also presents various kinds of assistance to the devotees. Amid the chanting of “hare Rama, hare Krishna” and the serene environment of temple, devotees can spend a few days in peace. It also has an audio visual theatre, equipped with the latest technology. Food relief foundation, a part of ‘food for life’ programs, is another important activity of ISKCON Temples. Here healthy and carefully prepared vegetarian food is distributed for free to everyone.
